Sea of Blue

Abstraction is emotion in paint without the encroachment of reality. My approach to abstraction evolved over several decades. It includes aesthetic and technical aspects from the art of woodcut, impressionism, and photorealism.

I borrowed the idea of carving into paint with sculpting tools from woodcut. The multi-hues strokes of color I developed from impressionist painting. The glazes of transparent acrylic I borrowed from my photorealistic landscape phase.

Abstraction represents a different state of mind from realist painting and is not opposed to any other school of art. All the art forms I practice, including illustration, find their way into my abstracts in a transformed state.
